Hi, what's the earliest time of the year that fish have been taken off these areas? I'm going out with friends to fish Gädda/Havsöring in the middle part of the Stockholm Archipelego on the 6th-7th-8th of May & thought of trolling for Lax off Utö/Huvudskär on one of the days... Any idea if it would be a waste of time as it's probably a little early.....

Thanks for the reply, I thought that it was too early :-(
Anyway, I should be up at Singö for the first week in June & live in my boat like a sea gypsy :D

Cheers,
John.

Haha där ser man.
To get back "on-topic", the earliest time of year fish have been caught up in your area, must be around mid November. So unfortunately, this year it won´t be much of a season :-) (honestly, I have no idea, just fell off topic again).
have a good one and a cuppa PG.

The date for the first salmon very much depends on
- Winter/Spring (if the water is cold then the salmons in general starts migrating later)
- Weather (if it´s too windy then most anglers wait until the next weekend)
- Tradition (if everyone says middle of May, why go out beginning of May?)
- Lazyness (with a limited numvber of fishing days per year, most anglers prefer to let someone else do the job and wait until the first salmon has been caught)

More statistics (from 1998 and forwards) can be found on Regals hemsida (http://www.regalmarin.se/rapport_sthlm.htm).

Fishing is seldom a waste of time,
Remember that big trout also can hit spoons and not all salmon are emigrating, but I think the watertemperature is the main issue.

I know everyone has different ideas but what temperature do you all like best for Lax?
I'm going to try fishing deep in the Summer so what temp do you recommend to look for on the Fishhawk??

Ok I thought 6 degrees so it's not too different.
Thanks,
John.

7-8 degrees is what I am trying to spot on my Fish Hawk.
Basically fishing just above, and near the thermocline is what i try to do.
I do believe that the sight below the thermocline gets close to nada, and amount of light penetrating the thermocline also close to none.

Thanks for the replies, i'll look for 7 to 8 from now on, not too sure about the light disappearing under the thermocline though as I was a commercial air diver for many years (22) & have passed through many of them during my time underwater . Closest to us was the Frigg field off Stavanger, worked there through the spring/Summer of '86 & the water was totaly clear down to where the sat divers were working & I worked between Denmark & Sweden in the eary 80s. I also worked a lot off the East coast of Scotland & there were serious thermoclmes with a big temperature change but for sure the water clarity never changed. Maybe it's different here in the Baltic? a camera would show the answer.
Cheers,
John.

Right John, every year at Landsort there are a dive boat at the dock, usually I speak with the skipper/head diver and he told me whenever you get below 7-8 m below the algie belt the water usually clears considerably, on a sunny day it should penetrate good down there at 80-110 feet.
However in case there are massive algie layers in the surface during high to late summer it will be different, like running thru a lawn or spinace soup..... this will affect light penetrating, look for clean surface water and look for the 6 degree layer down there it works I know it for sure thrust me.
In case you need I also have positions to try out there, they are also available at the Regals pages I guess or call Jimmy and ask him, he was of course the star out there as usually, right John the best!

Dessutom anses laxen hellre vilja ta betet underifrån än ovanifrån så hellre fiska lite för högt än för lågt.

This is all interesting stuff, I forgot about the Baltic algie factor......
