I fished today out of Muskegon. I brought my video camera along so I could record my Big Jon Brutes in action, just incase anyone would like to see how FAST they really are.

I have a pair of 800 cranking amp batteries wired in parallel, and a 55amp alternator running my downriggers. I ran a 4AWG wire from the batteries to a terminal strip at the back of the boat. From the terminal strip to the riggers I have 12 gauge wire.

The first video shows a 12lb cannonball being lowered to 100'.

This video shows a 12lb cannonball being raised from 100'.

I am tickled pink with these downriggers! :D

Hi Mike
Im wandering if you could give me a helping hand here

Im a little bit curious of those "Brute ES" or "Big Jon's Gold Speed Rigger" downriggers.
First, are the two models the same?
I cant find any good information regarding the features for those models...

When looking at the Alltackle.com home site this is the only place I have found a different description of those downriggers feature compared to the information at Big Jon´s own home site. :???:

Alltackle says those downriggers have an: "All New Advanced Electronics" including "Auto-stop system" and a "Variable Speed Control"?
http://www.alltackle.com/big_jon_downriggers.htm

But this information is lacking at Big Jon´s own home site?
http://www.bigjon.com/store/list.asp?SubTypeID=54&ProductID=422

Also, there is a $ 100 price difference indicating it really is a difference in the features?

Could you bring some light to the issue because I might be interested to buy a pair of the "Big Jon's Gold Speed Rigger" from Alltackle

Sorry for the delayed reply.

The ones shown on alltackle are the brutes with the variable speed control and the auto shut off already installed.

Here is what I know about the Big Jon Brutes. Mine came without a variable speed control and auto shut off. I can purchase the speed control and auto shut off and install it on my down riggers. I have not decided if I want to do this yet. I had a set of pro tournaments before I picked up the brutes. There is a bead that needs to be crimped on the cable. There is a micro switch in the pulley closest to the reel. When the bead contacts the micro switch, it shuts off the rigger. Where this bead is crimped onto the cable, I had issues with it fraying. :(

No problem with the delay Mike.

Concerning the two models, the one that already has the electronics installed, someone said it was an older model of the Brute ES? But what you said here I can only understand it that this model are a later model not an earlier one?

But when looking at Big Jon´s home site, there is no place I could find that model so I am a little bit confused........ :???:

Reason for asking are that I would like to compare the features of the two brands: Big Jon and Scotty´s model 1116........

Big Jon use to make a speed rigger. It is the same thing as the Brute now.

Hi Mike. Hope everything is fine with you and your fishing catches, hehe :D
I was wandering if you have seen this concerning my new Brute ES:
I have constructed a soft start to my riggers and you could see a few pictures in this tread:

Here are the promised pictures. They speak for themselves. The pictures on the enclosures in the Brute's switch box was a little blurry but it gets the crap behind the camera

DMMén (the last image) shows 38 mV (0.038 V) which is a 1 mV amps, thus showing the 38A when 20 lb Sharklod hoisted up.

Arb. / lift height of rig was here six meters (18 feet) and took about six seconds with a weight of 20 lb.

I am not sure what you are trying to say with your post.

Hi Mike. My intention was only to inform you that I have constructed and build an electronic soft start to my Brute´s. From the beginning, it was an early project intended to my former Scotty´s 1116 riggs but I sold them together with my former boat.

I have now finished that project to my new Brutes.
The soft start will save the power switch from heavy on-current peaks and the power switch should last much longer than in the original circuit.

When switching up or down, initially there is no current flowing in the switch 1-2 seconds later there will be a rising current level to the motor which force it to start slow in the beginning. after approx 2 seconds when switching upp or down, the motor will have full power.

The greatest benefit with an electronic soft start as I can see it will be when raising the cannon ball outside the gunwale, avoiding tangling and dangling when trying to leveling the cannon ball outside the boat, especially when using larger cannon balls (15-20 lb)
Also, its much easier to regulate the exact depth level when lowering the cannon ball.

Nothing more than that ;-) :D

Another positive "side effect"you will get is a reduced force and stress put on the wire, the downrigger/booms and on your gunwhale.
My long boom Scotty pro-packs puts a significant stress on both the boat and on the downrigger when going from zero to full action immedeately

As i´ve said before, let me know if you need a field tester :-) , I have four pro-packs that I would love to run with your soft start.

Nice product Ramon!

Thanks for reminding me. I forgot to mention this in my last postings here but you´r right. It prevent excessive force on the gunwale/pedestals , rig-booms and wire-shock absorbers etc. including the benefits described earlier ;) :D

Yes, I´ll let you know when a small serial production has occurred, thanks ;)
